December 2-15, 2018
Professor Sandy Madar and Associate Professor Mary Quade are teaching Natural History in the 21st Century, a study abroad course to Quito, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands December 2-15, 2018. The trip will include three nights in Quito, three nights in Puerto Ayora on the island Santa Cruz in the Galapagos, and an eight-day private cruise through the islands to study up close the unique biomes of the islands and the animals that inhabit them—including Galapagos penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, boobies, frigate birds, several types of sharks, Galapagos tortoises, marine and land iguanas, seals, whales, Darwin’s famous finches, pelicans, tropical fish, and many others. We’ll consider history and human impact on the islands and the processes of evolution at work. Participants will hike, snorkel, observe, write, reflect, and learn from our Ecuadorian naturalist.
If there are spots open on the trip, which accommodates 14 students, they will be offered mid-March to alumni and friends of the college. Cost to audit the course is $7,225. Contact Sandy Madar or Mary Quade for more information.
