|Richard and Susan (Brethauer) Pejeau '66/'66|
Rich Pejeau served Hiram College in numerous ways for over 35 years before his departure in 2002 for the next stage of his career as Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Averett University, Virginia. At Hiram, he started as a resident director of the men's dormitory and ended his career as the Associate Vice President for Development. In the meantime, he also held positions in the offices of Admission and Financial Aid. Rich has been a faithful friend and supporter of the College and the village over the years; he even served as Mayor for Hiram from 1985-1991. He was a member of the Western Reserve Kiwanis Club, and was instrumental in starting their Spaghetti Dinner - their most successful fundraiser. He was a member of the Hiram College Public Garden Society and he also started and served as advisor of the Hiram College Sailing Club.
Rich was constantly looking for ways to make his community better, and ways in which he could lend his help. When his mother moved into the Laurel Lake Retirement Community, he joined the Planned Giving Committee there to assist the seniors with their estate planning.
Rich married his Hiram sweetheart, Sue (Brethauer) Pejeau, one year after they graduated from Hiram in 1966. Sue started her career as an elementary school teacher in Berea City Schools, taught at Crestwood Schools, and taught part time in Hiram Education Departments in the 1990's. Sue's volunteerism for the College and Hiram community matched her husband's. She served on the Alumni Executive Board from 1970-1973, and has been an active member of the Hiram Women's Council since 1990. As part of the Women's Council, she filled various officer positions, including treasurer. One of her Women's Council projects was the Hiram Cookbook, for which she completed all of the artwork. Sue was a supporter of the Hiram Christian Church and served on many of their committees. She was also an active member of her own Methodist Church.Together, Rich and Sue “lived Hiram' for over 35 years. There was not a single job that this community asked of them that they refused to take on. The two of them exemplify the ideal in an alumni couple -- they believed in the value of the Hiram education and the Hiram community and they have never stopped working to promote it. For their devoted support, Rich and Sue Pejeau are indeed Lifelong Leaders for Hiram College
