KEVIN TOLBERT AEB PROFILE
Accounting and financial management major.
Where are you from?
Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Where do you currently live?
Shaker Heights, Ohio.
3 words to describe yourself?
I am innovative, patient and adventurous.
What is the most interesting thing about you?
I once ate 10 junior bacon cheeseburgers from Wendy's.
How did you find Hiram?
There was a school visit at my high school and I was deciding between Hiram and Ohio University. They were drastically different in size but after my campus visits, I decided that Hiram would be a better fit long term.
What clubs were you involved in?
I was on rugby team, track and field team, chess club and the African American Students United.
Your favorite Hiram traditions?
Going to late night meals at Miller Dining Hall when it was open 24 hours a day.
Professor Kissel and Professor Rose in accounting, both were very good at making complicated topics easy and Professor Kissel taught me about the stock market and investing.
What is your favorite location on campus?
I loved the Kennedy Center because you could play pool, watch tv and grab something to eat.
What is your favorite Hiram memory?
It really felt like a big family, I am still very close to the friends I made.
What is the most important thing that you learned from Hiram?
I learned to always have a great work ethic and always look for opportunities to better myself.
Do you feel that Hiram prepared you for your future?
Yes, yes it did. I went to Case Western Reserve for my master’s in accounting, 2011. Hiram gave me the tools I needed to succeed professionally, and Case sharpened them.
What is your current employment? Retired? What are you doing now?
I worked as an auditor in Ohio at the accounting firm Deloitte. I now do taxes for individuals and corporations. I enjoy working with small business and local start-ups in the Cleveland area because it gives me joy to see the economy of Cleveland grow and I’m thankful that I have a part in the process.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
Going to the gym and working out. My friends and I get together on the weekends to play golf and I am also a Cleveland sports fan—I especially like the Cavaliers, even though Lebron James left, again.
What brought you back to reconnect with the AEB?
The AEB is one way I give back to Hiram by sharing the knowledge and my experiences I accumulated over the years. It is really nice to see recent graduates and older individuals connect and share advice with each other. I love listening to college stories from the past and hearing how the campus has changed over the years.
