New position and new publication for Roger Adkins '95

Posted By Roger A. Adkins, Monday, August 5, 2019
I have recently accepted a newly created position at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. I will serve (starting in September 2019) as the Executive Director of Global and Career Education, overseeing global learning (study away/abroad, international student and scholar services, ESL programs, and Earlham programs that serve students from across the country, such as the Border Studies program based in Arizona and Mexico) as well as career education (internships, intentional learning outcomes in on-campus student employment, career readiness, professional development, etc.). The move brings me closer to family members who still live in western Ohio and also situates me within a Quaker institution where the community values align very well with my own: promoting peace, social justice, nonconfrontational conflict resolution, and global understanding. I have spent the past four years serving as Director of International and Cultural Education at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where I have offered a study abroad course on folklore and social justice in England and Scotland. I also recently published a coauthored book chapter on decolonizing approaches in education abroad programming (it appears in Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experience, edited by Brewer and Ogden, 2019) and am now at work on a few other projects on decolonizing and queering approaches in education abroad. My Hiram education continues to serve me well, and I have found my professional home in liberal arts colleges as well.

I have  recently self-published a book of short stories, The Loneliness, as Kelly Garriott Waite. I look forward to publishing Fractured in March.

After having spent the past eight years on the East Coast, I'm looking forward to returning to Ohio with my family.

Captain Elisabeth (Lisa) Hesse, MD, MTM&H, recently published an article titled "Poisoning-related hospitalizations and risk factors for self-inflicted poisoning in the active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2001-2010" in the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report. The data in this article helped inform the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army for a meeting regarding prescription drug overdose and mental health issues on Capitol Hill.

The article can be accessed for free at http://afhsc.mil/viewMSMR?file=2011/v18_n11.pdf#Page=01, on page 9.
