Congratulations to Dale Goode '72 and Amber Kempthorn '00

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Two of our Hiram art alums, Dale Goode and Amber Kempthorn, have achieved the high distinction of having been selected as featured artists in the inaugural Front International, a huge international series of exhibitions and art installations in Northeast Ohio beginning in July. Dale, who graduated in 1972, was one of only six artists from the area invited to do an installation. Amber, class of 2000, was one of only six artists from Northeast Ohio chosen by Front's director to be included in an exhibition featuring artists from around the Great Lakes.

Ecological Restoration in the Midwest: Past, Present, and Future
edited by Christian Lenhart & Peter C. Smiley Jr.
Bur Oak Books

“The editors and authors bring together the history, theory, and practice of ecological restoration in the Midwest into a much-needed resource. There is no comparable book dedicated to the broad range of topics, challenges, and successes of restoration for this region of the United States.”—Christopher A.May, the Nature Conservancy

“The Midwest is really the birthplace of restoration ecology. Until now there has been no comprehensive text that covers the history and multitude of restoration projects done in the Midwest. This volume by Lenhart and Smiley remedies this situation. A must-read for restoration ecologists in the Midwest and beyond.”—Douglas D. Kane, Defiance College

Focusing on six cutting-edge case studies that highlight thirty restoration efforts and research sites throughout the region—Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio—editors Christian Lenhart and Peter “Rocky” Smiley Jr. bring together a group of scholars and practitioners to show how midwestern restoration efforts have developed, as well as where they are headed. Whether cleaning up contamination from auto plants in Ohio, or restoring native prairie grasses along the Iowa highway, the contributors uncover a vast network of interested citizens and volunteer groups committed to preserving the region’s environment.

This study, intended for researchers, students, and practitioners, also provides an updated synthesis of restoration theory and practice, and pinpoints emerging issues of importance in the Midwest, such as climate change and the increase in invasive species it will bring to the region. Though focusing exclusively on the Midwest, the contributors demonstrate how these case studies apply to restoration efforts across the globe.

Ecological Restoration in the Midwest is available for sale at bookstores or directly from the University of Iowa Press at 800-621-2736 or uipress.uiowa.edu. Customers in the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, or Africa may order from the Eurospan Group at eurospanbookstore.com.

A Note From Lynn (Dussel) Cathcart '45

Posted By Administration, Thursday, May 3, 2018
It is depressing to see no notes for the class of 1945. Most of my classmates are gone now. The ones that are left live back east, so no chance for me to see them. Still playing bridge and watching football. Go Browns! Terriers too!

A Note from Chris Manthey '69

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, March 27, 2018
I would like to submit for alumni class notes that I retired on December 31, 2017, as a Special Counsel with the U.S. Treasury Department, Office Comptroller of the Currency, after 32 years total with the federal government. I plan to spend time traveling and doing railroad historical research. I have already completed a trip to southeast Asia in January and February, and will be going on the Hiram Alumni trip to Italy this fall.
