A Note From Rich Reid '74 and Pam (Bruderly) Reid '74

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, January 22, 2019
Rich and Pam (Bruderly) Reid, '74, have retired from their teaching positions. Rich taught at Pettisville and Pam taught German at Tinora, both small schools in rural NW Ohio. They also lead the youth group at their church. Together, over their careers they have led 55 students and youth groups on trips to Germany, Austria, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and throughout the U.S. The Reids credit the groundbreaking opportunities they had at Hiram to study across disciplines and to experience life abroad on Extramural programs to Mexico, Spain, and Germany as their inspiration to help young people learn to appreciate other cultures and to see how we are all connected. Most recently Pam and Rich took a trip alone -- just the two of them-- to walk the Way of St. James, the Camino de Santiago, across northern Spain. "We are pleased to see that Hiram continues to lead with forward thinking innovations in education.

A Note from Sarah Heiss '06 and Russ Elek '07

Posted By Administration, Thursday, January 10, 2019

Sarah Heiss '06 and Russ Elek '07, married in front Bates Hall at Hiram College in 2012, had a wonderfully full 2018!

Sarah earned tenure and promotion at the University of Vermont in 2018. Sarah was also awarded the 2018 Joseph E. Carrigan Award for Teaching, which is the highest recognition within her College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. With tenure, comes a new line of research focused on health disclosures and informal accommodation requests in the workplace.

In 2018, Russ started a new job as a Communication Specialist at the Burlington School District in Vermont (BSDVT). Among many other activities, this fall, Russ helped the BSDVT successfully pass a $70 million dollar voter-approved bond to finance a project to bring Burlington High School into the 21st century. This is the largest school bond to be passed in Vermont’s history!

Together, they bought their first home in South Burlington, Vermont in 2018 too. They live there with their two children Thad (born 2014) and Marshall (born 2016). Life is full. God is good.

A Note from Marilyn Cover '75

Posted By Administration, Thursday, January 10, 2019

Greetings from Portland, OR

I retired this fall and have received special recognition for my work in civic education which all began with a class in political socialization with Professor Ken Kolsen. My work has involved teaching Street Law at Lewis and Clark Law School for 40 years after taking the class at Cleveland Marshall College of Law (I Love the new Hiram CSU program). Helping teachers explain the law and concepts of the Constitution and Bill of Rights to K- HS students has been my passion for the past 40 years. Under a Civics Exchange grant I worked with teachers and Judges in Croatia for 12 years. An annual mock trial program continues today as a result of our work.

Now I’m ready to embrace retirement and see what’s next.
